WSG Declaration Black Lives Matter – July 3, 2020

When Washington Stage Guild was founded in 1986, we chose the name in part to express our love of DC and its region, and felt lucky to be part of such a diverse and vibrant place. From the beginning we wanted to enrich this community and contribute to the cultural life here. The plays we produce, the stories we tell, are meant to resonate with everyone, and we hope they do. As we watched the recent events in our neighborhood and others in town, we have realized that we can do better—must do better. While we’ve committed to non-traditional casting and hiring from the start, we haven’t done enough. While we’ve had board members of color, we haven’t had enough. While we’ve produced works, including new ones, by playwrights of many ethnicities and nationalities, we haven’t done enough.

The demonstrations on behalf of Black Lives Matter have driven these hard truths home. We don’t yet know when we can open again, but moving forward, we know we have to acknowledge these facts and take action on them if we truly want to make this a better city, a better region, a better country. And so, we will. If you have thoughts on these issues, either on how we’ve operated in the past or how we might in the future, please share them with us. We will listen. And we will do better.
